Whip It! (Good) films about girls rule.

I love films about girls and sadly decent ones are quite hard to come by, so its understandable why I was set to maximum joy for about 90 minutes this weekend while watching Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, ‘Whip It’. It stars the cooler-than-just-about-everybody-on-earth Ellen Page (of Juno fame) sticking it to her overbearing beauty pageant mum and directing some potent teenaged rage by taking up girl power sport, Roller Derby.

Brutal contact sports never looked so hot.

The rest of the cast is great too; Drew Barrymore, Eve, Alia Shawkat and especially Juliette Lewis who’s hilarious as Page’s indomitable nemesis ‘Iron Maven’.

The whole film made me want to dye my hair rainbow colours, cover myself in ink and go bat-shit in a pair of roller skates. It was just really simple and uplifting and if you’re ever in need of a broken hearted heroine, Page’s character Bliss provides us with a much needed antithesis to the likes of Twilight’s simpering ‘Bella Swan’. I feel a girl crush coming on.

Also, check out Drew Barrymore’s hair on the night of the premier. I love.
